We had an adventuresome weekend, which included both challenges and rewards.
The successes:
Saturday: Visiting the “rainforest aerial tramway” where we had a tram ride through forest canopy (mid level and top level) plus a slow walking tour on the forest floor. A knowledgeable and friendly naturalist guided all aspects. Here are a few of my photos from Saturday. (I found the rain forest too visually complex to easily photograph. So these are just some impressions.)
Sunday: Visiting Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú, the “tallest active volcano” in Costa Rica. Its last major eruption: 1963-65. Elevation: 3432 m. The mountain creates its own weather and is typically foggy in the afternoon. We were treated to a mix of fog and sun. The second pair of photos (top and below) is from this site.
The challenges included being pulled over by a CR policeman within my first hour of driving. (Ingrid managed to talk us out of the ticket.) And yesterday, we spent all morning driving to and from Poás Volcano National Park, which turned out to be closed because of the recent earthquake here (about 2 weeks ago). Turns out it reopens today! (Our car rental agent gave us the wrong information that it was already open and we didn’t double check before driving all the way there.)

You're right about the visual complexity of the rain forrest. What you need in these photos is a pinpoint of other, contrasting color to create a focus: a red parrot or flower. But then again, that's not really the reality of what you see when you are there.
You are right about needing something to stand apart from all the green. See my later work, e.g. in "Cloud forest 'scenes'."
