Cycling to Playa Ostional

18 March 2009

The third nearby beach is 6 km to the northwest of our home in Nosara. But there are three river crossings, something that is explicitly forbidden in our rental agreement, so driving was not a good option.

Fortunately, the house has two mountain bikes for renters’ use. Ingrid borrowed a third bike — a big beach cruiser — from a neighbor and at 7:30 this morning we set off.

The dirt road was bumpy and dusty, but the traffic was very light and a slow pace was all we could manage in the morning heat. We passed mango orchards and dry grassy fields with palm trees. We also saw many of the “brahman” bulls and cows that are common here in Guanacaste. Two of the river crossings featured pedestrian suspension bridges. The beach was pretty enough, but with dark sand in the hot sun we weren’t encouraged to stay long.
