2 February 2009“Eolica” (probably derived from the Greek god of the wind, Aeolus) is the name (or a name?) that they use for wind turbines here in Costa Rica. This is, it seems, the windy season, and the wind was very strong where we visited.

On the drive back today we left via a different route and passed through an under-construction wind farm with large turbines that appear to be near state-of-the art. With a volcano as a backdrop, what an idyllic combination!

But security is never far from one's mind in Costa Rica. Back in SJ this afternoon, I saw the tail end of a smash-and-grab event that one hears about. It went down like this: A parked car on a busy street in mid afternoon; two young men, one driving the getaway car, the other doing the deed; a quickly smashed rear window; the alarm goes off; the thief quickly opens the door, grabs some duffel bag or purse from the back seat; calmly walks back to the waiting car; hops in; and they are off. The whole robbery only took about 15 s from start to finish.
