Mariposas, again

We visited a “mariposario” today. This facility was well developed compared to the one in Cahuita. We had a guided tour for about 90 minutes and then wandered around the facility for another hour or so shooting pictures.

We saw very many blue morphos, but they are quite hard to photograph. They spend more time flying than standing still and when they do settle, they tend to have their wings closed, showing an interesting pattern but dull brown color on the outside.

Still, I obtained many fine shots of the other species. Here are some of the better ones. The photo below shows an example of a mid-elevation butterfly that lives near the forest floor. Under the low light conditions of its natural habitat, coloration of the wings is less valuable as a reproductive display to attract a mate -- instead they use pheromone release and have translucent wings.
