Reptile, amphibian, arachnid

9 March 2009

Today's entry started out as “vamos a comer,” but I haven’t taken enough interesting pictures that relate to the nice places we eat, or even our meals here in the Tree Top House.

Ingrid and Daniela have taken some terrific photos of wildlife here. Last week, they traveled to the Osa Peninsula which was reputed to be the absolutely most special place to view wildlife in Costa Rica. The report back: it was nice, but not extraordinary. But they did get some wonderful pictures, including an iguana and a colorful, poisonous frog. (The frog was tiny, about the size of an adult fingernail.)

I was choosing these photos from among several alternatives when a new photo opportunity presented itself — suddenly — on our bed sheet (see above!). The source of this scorpion: unknown. Fortunately, I saw this one before encountering it some other way. (It also survived the encounter with me.) It was the biggest we've seen (about 5 cm long) and Ingrid suspects it might be a pregnant female. We've learned that scorpions give birth to live young and carry them on their backs for about 3 weeks (see below!). If any of the young fall off the back, the mom eats them!
