Bajo del Tigre (Jaguar Canyon)

14 February 2009

Monteverde and Santa Elena have a large number of things to do. Contrary to the parallel situation in the US, where the best sites would be public with support from tax $$ and modest entry fees, here most of the activities are based on private enterprise, so everything has a price and it isn’t particularly cheap. (Example: our first outing involved a 1.5 h aerial tram ride plus a 1.5 h guided ground tour of the rainforest and cost $60 per person. That is pretty typical.)

Anyway, we started modestly today, hiking at a very nearby reserve in an area called Bajo del Tigre. (Unguided, the cost for the three of us was only $20 total.) We were almost the only people in the reserve and there was a nature trail that wound through the forest about 2-3 miles. Because of ecorich scenery, we wandered slowly. Quite pleasant and interesting, our best sightings turned out to be just at the entrance, where we saw a gang of capuchin (white-faced) monkeys, close enough to even get a few good pictures. Afterward, we had an excellent lunch at an Argentine cafe and then wandered in the direction of the Monteverde cloud reserve.

Ingrid's handheld camera is a Panasonic Lumix with 10× optical zoom and stabilization software. Plus, we know that she has a steadier hand than I do. She took this great capuchin shot today.
