On Super Bowl Sunday, we took a daylong tour on the flanks of the volcano, from our lodging up into and around the national park Rincon de la Vieja. For the 8 h tour, we spent almost 5 h on the horses. (That is more than the total amount of time I've ever ridden a horse!!! And I have the bruises on my behind to prove my lack of experience!) The scenery was lovely and we were treated to a good dose of wild animal sightings. The volcanic parts of the tour were not so special for one who has visited Lassen and Yellowstone, but we did get some great photos of the sun streaming through the steam from a fumarole.
