The walk was more aesthetic today. Here are some images.
The first photo shows our apartment in context (one can see our bedroom window just past the laborer with the security camera). The next two are from a park (Sabana) about 2.5 mi east of our apartment and on the west edge of the center of San José. The 4th shot was taken from a small hill a few hundred m to the west of our apartment that affords a nice view of the surrounding mountains and the central valley that contains San José.

Was the street of your appt. always so quiet? And who is the cross for on the hill? Is it a monument/ did it have an inscription?

Our street had a moderate amount of traffic. Because there was very little vegetation and the apartment was so close to the street, I was really conscious of the noise, especially when a bus came along. But there were quiet times, too.
I don't know anything more about the cross. Although it was only about 3 miles from our house, I only went by it this one time. There was some damage on it and a bit of graffiti, but no inscription. It was certainly a monument, but to what I don't know.
