TreeTop House, Monteverde

12 February 2009

We made the move today to Monteverde. In most regards, this is the polar opposite of San José, based on first impressions. Whereas SJ is a bustling capital city, MV and its nearby neighbor town of Santa Elena (SE) are small (~8000 residents total) mountain towns. The primary attraction of MV is a large cloud-forest nature reserve. Somehow the Quakers were tied up in this story, having settled here in the 1950s, but I haven’t learned the history well yet. SE is a Tico town about 5 km from MV. As small as these communities are, we aren’t even in either one, but rather a few hundred m off of the dirt road that connects them. We’re staying in this wonderfully idiosyncratic “Tree Top House,” which is the subject of the posted pictures. There are three levels and we occupy the upper level. It is small but workable. And it is lovely. (Apparently, the building was once a gallery/sales site for a local artist, and in recent years has been converted into guest accommodations.)

We are here for 31 days and I’ll be working throughout on weekdays at least. We have gone ahead with plans to focus our last 2 weeks in CR on travel (and not work). We’ll be visiting for 4-5 days each Nosara (on the Pacific coast in the northern half of the country), Arenal (active volcano in the middle of the country), and Manuel Antonio (southern Pacific).
