Today’s photos are of free, “wild” animals that I’ve seen here in Monteverde. To various degrees, all were sighted in the space where humans engage the natural environment.
The first shot portrays the “black guan,” or (in Spanish) “pava negra.” It is about the size of a chicken. We saw two last weekend. This photo is from the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, taken along the trail not far from the park entrance.
The second picture depicts a white-throated capuchin. We’ve seen bands of these on three occasions here in Monteverde. In this case, three monkeys were on the roof of a building in “central” Monteverde. There is a small market in the building and sometimes fruit is set out on display on the sidewalk. Shortly after our arrival, we caught a glimpse of some monkeys stealing bananas from this display. In this more recent instance, there was a big crowd of people gathered around to watch the three monkeys and so they didn’t get any loot.
The third photo depicts an “olingo” sipping syrup from a hummingbird feeder. The photo was shot just outside of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, at the same location as the hummingbird pictures I posted a few weeks ago. It was pretty amazing to see this guy walk along the thin wire from a tree to the feeder and then grab the dangling wire with sufficient dexterity to maintain his balance, upside down, and tip the feeder so he could drink from it.
