Cahuita Take 2: Beaches
8 February 2009
There were 3 terrific beaches within walking distance of where we stayed. Playa Blanca lies within the Cahuita National Park. The park was damaged in the flooding, and it was closed until noon on Sunday, but the beach was in great shape. Closer to where we stayed, there were two black-sand beaches, Playa Negra and Playa Grande. These were totally littered with debris from the storm (and the water was filled with river litter). Along some of the cleaner sections, we could still walk along the shore. Other places were impassable. We’re told that this happens in November each year and it usually takes 2-3 months for natural processes to reestablish this fantastic black-sand beach. A February storm causing this kind of beach “damage” is rare.
