Rincon de la Vieja Take 1: Rainbows

31 January 2009

For the weekend, we drove about 150 miles to the northwest corner of CR to a fairly remote national park known as “Rincon de la Vieja.” It took most of Saturday to make the trip, between renting the car, coping with traffic (the Pan American highway is one lane in each direction most of its length in CR), getting lost (a common occurrence here). For the last 30 min or so of driving along a dirt road toward our accommodations (the rustic “Rinconcito” lodge), we were greeted with a lovely and long-lasting rainbow. The overall landscape is arid, at least relative to the other parts of CR we’ve seen. We got in a late-afternoon walk on the grounds of the ranch where we stayed, which had patches of high lushness. Rivers abound throughout the country.
