Bicycling Bliss: Campanet to Port de Sóller

3 May 2009

What makes for a great ride?

Excellent weather — check!
Great road (good surface, well graded, light traffic proceeding slowly) — check, check, check!
Route with some challenge, but not overly taxing — check!
Stops along the way for cappuccino and pastry and fresh squeezed orange juice — check, check, check!
Spectacular scenery — check plus!
Outstanding destination — check!

We enjoyed a terrific ride today, covering 50 km from Campenet in north central Mallorca to Port de Sóller in the center of the northwest coast. Most of the ride involved either climbing or descending along winding, switchback roads with 5% grade. In all, we climbed about 3000 feet. We took it at a leisurely pace, starting about 9:15 and not finishing until about 2 PM. Since the sun sets here at almost 9 PM, our arrival left plenty of time to explore this interesting seaport resort.
