Sevilla: First impressions
9 May 2009
One-word impressions, based on 2+ weeks in Spain.
Barcelona - Majestic
Mallorca - Enchanting
Sevilla - Alive (but not so much in the morning!)
Barcelona was beautifully finished and presented a stately face to the visitor. Mallorca is extraordinarily enjoyable to visit, although we saw little of Mallorcans. Sevilla has a lived-in look. The Sevillanos seem to be enjoying life altogether too much to worry that their city is a bit rough around the edges.
We are staying in Sevilla for almost three weeks. We've rented a 2-bedroom flat in a 6-unit building called "Las Suites del Maestro." The location is fantastic, just a block from the Cathedral, right in the heart of the city. The unit is also remarkably quiet. The internet connection is good. The downsides: It is a bit small for 4 adults x 3 weeks and the furnishings are more aesthetic than functional. (I have no desk, for example.)
This afternoon, we rambled aimlessly through our neighborhood. It was a big day for weddings and we saw many exquisitely dressed wedding parties near the Cathedral. Sevilla is famous for flamenco and judging from the shoes, dancers start young. Successful shops are intermingled with boarded up units. There is a fair amount of graffiti (and some of it is good!).
The Cathedral is stunning.
