Farewell to Mallorca

8 May 2009

After the spectacular days in the Mallorcan coastal mountains, today we came back down to sea level and back down to earth. Our final ride was 70 km, with only one significant climb, back to the Delta Hotel, near Palma, where this trip began.

Gabrielle, Ingrid and I rode together, briskly when we were on the bikes, but with long breaks to enjoy our last full day on this island. In Santa Maria, we had another Mallorcan coffee and pastry. (And, I even got a long-overdue haircut at the equivalent of a "Supercuts" in this town.) We stopped in Llucmajor for an excellent lunch at a sidewalk café overlooking the just-finished open air market. By just past 3 PM, we arrived at our hotel, cleaned up our bikes, and started the work of repacking for our respective onward journeys.

I spent a bit of time today looking through the photos I've shot these past few weeks. I decided there were better shots in this archive than any from today. So, here are a few more that seemed very good at the time I took them, but somehow didn't make the first cut for posting in this blog.

A few notes about these photos:
Top -- Port de Sóller, heading up a road toward one of the two lighthouses that mark the port's mouth. (3 May)
Middle (left) -- Ingrid crossing a stone bridge after our first serious climb, on 2 May, when we rode a loop around Orient and Bunyola.
Middle (right) -- Carole, Ingrid, and Gabrielle looking out over the port at Sant Elm (7 May)
Lower -- The rugged mountains on the route to Port de Sóller (3 May)
Bottom -- Sunset at Port de Sóller (5 May)
