The day started with cool overcast skies and even a light drizzle. We started before 9:00 for the first time on the entire trip. For a few hours, we pedaled along a rural stretch of Hwy 1 passing through a hilly dry landscape. At the halfway point, we reached the coast near Gaviota, where Hwy 1 joins with the 101 freeway. We then rode 20-25 miles on the freeway shoulder before exiting at Hollister Street near Goleta. After a nice lunch at a Japanese restaurant, we rode the final few miles to the Santa Barbara airport. There we picked up a one-way rental of a small SUV and drove home. It was a great trip overall. And it was a bit unsettling to undo eight days of moderately intense cycle touring with a six-hour drive!

The riding looks steep, and the japanese food looks delicious. Congratulations on a major biking accomplishment. Elmar and I had been pondering renting a baby trailer and doing a night or two overnight on some (very flat) bike path here during Elmar's summer break. Your ride is inspiring me to look into it more concretely.
