On the one hand, I don't have the proper equipment to be photographing the moon. On the other hand, it's amazing what small handheld cameras can produce even in amateur hands. (These shots are with a Panasonic DMC-ZS25 using the "intelligent auto" setting; the camera was handheld with image stabilization software employed.)
The first photo was taken at approximately 5:45 AM, when the Moon was fully in the Earth's shadow. It was dim and red. The second photo was taken at about 6:30 AM. About half the moon has escaped the shadow. The sky has already brightened with the dawn, although because the moon is so bright the sky still appears dark in the image (and even then, the moon is overexposed so that no features are visible on its surface).

HOMEChem at UT Austin
Quick 1.5-day trip to Austin TX for a research planning meeting. Intensive monitoring to come in June 2018 of a research house on the Pickle Campus of UT Austin. The team includes Delphine (Colorado State University, Fort Collins) and Allen (one of my Cal collaborators). Rich is part of the host team at UT. The researchers attending the meeting are arrayed outside the research house. This project will feature the best collection of atmospheric chemistry equipment ever assembled to study indoor air quality.

Cycling Mt Diablo
It's an East Bay tradition to cycle up Mt Diablo on New Year's Day. At the top, someone estimated that today there would be 800 cyclists making the climb and maybe 500 cars driving in. The weather was unusually warm and almost all the interactions were cheerful. We took it slow — I logged 28 miles for the R/T with 3500 feet of climbing in about 3 h of seat time spread over a 5-h outing.
