I'm in Washington for a few days for the starting meeting of a new committee to which I've been appointed. It's a challenging assignment. In brief: how do environmental chemicals interact with the human microbiome to influence health? This work is sponsored by the USEPA and National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. It's being conducted under the auspices of the National Academies. Their building is just north of the Capital Mall. On Saturday, I had some walking time in the afternoon and strolled along a large portion of the Mall. The new museum of African American History and Culture had just opened and there was a large crowd to visit.

The African American History and Culture museum architecture looks like the De Young, is it the same architect?
I also like the shadows of people in your Washington Monument photo (second to last), the mirror the vertical pillars for each of the states that encircle the water.
I've been closely following the news about the new museum and am (obviously) very excited and interested in it. Will you get a chance to visit?
Daniela — Different architects (I had to look them up):
De Young (opened 2005) — Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron and Fong + Chan
African American museum (opened 2016) — Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup
(The architecture competition was decided in 2009)
Alexis — I didn't have a chance to visit this time (I'm already back home), but I'll be in DC on several occasions over the next 9 months, including in early November, so there should be a chance soon.
