We spent three hours today visiting the fine arts museum in Ghent. I was particularly struck by the excellent quality of light in many of the works. I had previously seen similar features in Danish paintings. I wonder if this aspect is common in northern European paintings because of the extraordinary qualities of sunlight and skylight in the north and because of the long winter periods when high quality natural light isn't a prominent feature. Many of the paintings that I show here feature illumination of a special character.

Ghent, Belgium
Here for an Indoor Air conference. Arrived last night after a long trip from California. Met Ingrid in the Brussels Airport. I taught this morning at a "summer school" attached to the conference for early career indoor air researchers. We had a bit of time to walk around the lovely center of the city in the afternoon. Our hotel is a Marriott, with a visually interesting atrium.
