On Saturday 29 December, we checked out of our small flat in Tokyo at 9 AM, stashed our luggage with Cheryl, the flat owner, and then spent the day trying wandering around Tokyo until our 7 PM departure for Kyoto. It rained all day. Some sites, such as the National Museum, were closed because of the year end holiday. We visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and (ironically) saw an exhibit featuring western art on loan from the NY Metropolitan Art Museum. When it was time finally to collect our bags, the rain was heavy and Ingrid and I got soaked making the mile-long dash from the train station to Cheryl's flat. She ordered a cab for us for the return and we (mostly) dried out during the 3 hour ride on the Shinkansen to Kyoto.
