The Haze

It's been about a week and a half since the Camp Fire began.  It's destroyed Paradise, burning through about 10000 homes, killing 60+ directly, with 600+ still unaccounted for.  The fire isn't yet contained.  Even though the fire is almost 200 miles away and in a prevailing downwind direction, the smoke has blown almost directly to the greater SF Bay Area so that the more than 6 million people living here are experiencing daily air quality index values in the vicinity of 200 for days on end.  The University of California officially cancelled classes for today because of concerns for health risks associated with air pollution exposure.  These photos are from three locations: Lake Temescal, a frontage road near Hwy 13, and Oakland's Mountain View Cemetery.  They are largely "as shot," except for cropping.  I did use a zoom on many (such as the geese shot), which foreshortens the distant elements in the scenes and in doing so tends to exaggerate the haze.  But (I believe) the overall visual feel is reasonably accurately captured in these pictures.

Scenes from Cycling in France

We spent six weeks cycling in France, leaving Paris on 2 September, arriving at our most southerly point, Saintes Maries de la Mer, on 24 September, and cycling back into Paris on 13 October.  Altogether, we cycled about 1400 miles over the course of 37 riding days.  Because of some technical limitations associated with having no computer, the day-to-day progress was recorded in another blog.  Here are some of the photos that I took with my regular camera and could not post at that site.
